Yet Another Challenge

Well we are back to being homeless again. The boatyard has requested we vacate the hire boat they allowed us to use.  They need to prepare it for the 2012 season. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to complete Waiouru and their forecasted delivery is now towards the end of May.  We don’t want to leave the site as my labour is part of the fit-out agreement.

I’ve been looking at various options and the boatyard manager has kindly agreed us to place a caravan in the yard whilst they complete Waiouru. My strategy is to beg, borrow, rent, buy steal (been on the other end of that one!) a second-hand budget caravan that has a toilet/shower. The option to either rent or buy will depend upon the cost and duration.

There is a caravan rental company about 4km from the boatyard and I plan to walk there in the middle of next week to see what they have available. With the amount of equipment we have now purchased I think we will also need to look for an annex.

It’s amazing how quickly your thoughts and plans can change from narrowboat to caravan. Smile

Just another challenge!

Where are you based?

We have a 45' boat that isn't used during school term time.

Hi Gareth,
We're at Aldermaston Wharf on the Kennet & Avon. We appreciate the offer. One of my concerns is there is no guarantee on the completion date.

Hi Both
If you're going to go down the caravan route, look to buy rather than rent. It's a good time to buy now, in the off season, and will be a good time to sell if the completion date is met. If you're canny you may not lose any money. Just be prepared to use a lot of gas for heating unless you can plug in to mains. An awning will provide extra storage/living space although obviously not secure. Buy and sell privately if you can. You'll just need a friend with a towbar on his car to move it for you...
Cheers, Geoff

Hi Geoff

Yes, I've suspect purchase before hire is the better of the two. Not sure about being able to sell it at the purchase price!
